Sport Manitoba offers scholarship programs to student athletes in Manitoba to assist them in their academics while pursuing their participation in sport. Three scholarship opportunities are approaching, please forward to your eligible members, athletes, coaches, etc.

Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarships – April 25th deadline

The Manitoba Foundation for Sports scholarship program administrated by Sport Manitoba was established to support young athletes of Sport Manitoba partners, who continue to participate in amateur sport while pursuing a post-secondary education on a full time basis.

The program's emphasis is placed on athletes who have competed at the provincial level or higher during 2010, and who have maintained a high level of academic standing, while showing a commitment to amateur sport through their involvement in coaching, officiating and volunteer activities. The number of scholarships awarded annually will vary, based on the number of applicants and the funds available for distribution. Preference will be given to athletes attending university or college in Manitoba and enrolled in a related field, pursuing a career in sport.

Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students entering a post-secondary institution and to students in their second or subsequent year in a post-secondary institution. The top applicant in each category will be awarded the Manitoba Foundation for Sports Milt Stegall Scholarship.

Coaching Manitoba Bursary – April 25th Deadline

Coaching Manitoba on an annual basis presents bursaries to four students who have demonstrated a commitment to coaching in Manitoba. Our goal is to encourage students to continue coaching while attending a post-secondary institution.

Students who are, or will be, enrolled in the upcoming school term in post-secondary education and currently coaching for a school, club or community center are invited to submit an application. One male and one female student coach from the Winnipeg region and one male and one female student from rural Manitoba will be selected to each receive a bursary of $500 to be used towards their tuition.

Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship - Deadline April 25, 2011

The Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship Endowment Fund provides financial support for Manitoba's high performance athletes in their pursuit of excellence at the national and international levels of competition while serving as a tribute to commemorate the Manitoba visit of Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal in 1999.

The Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship awards two (2) scholarships per year valued up to $3,000 each to one male and one female high performance athlete enrolled in a post-secondary institution in Manitoba.

Applications for all the Scholarships are available at on Sport Manitoba’s website at www.sportmanitoba.ca/page.php?id=43

Great News from Government - for a change...

Subject: News Release: Premier Greg Selinger Announces $1 Million for Community Centres and Teams

Manitoba News Release

SELINGER ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION FOR COMMUNITY CENTRES AND TEAMS
- - -
'First Sports' Program Applications Available Now

Young people, families and communities will enjoy improved sport and recreational opportunities and facilities, and the work of parent volunteers will be supported thanks to the new First Sports Program for recreation and sports clubs and their teams, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.

"Community and recreation centres are important hubs for children and families," said Selinger.  "Investing in children by supporting the places where they are often first introduced to sports and activities is what First Sports is all about."

The $1-million First Sports program will provide grants of up to $10,000 for community and recreation clubs and affiliated teams to purchase shared sports equipment such as hockey nets and baseball bases, as well as maintenance items such as grounds-keeping equipment.  The program will also help community clubs serving youth to undertake small capital projects to maintain and improve the condition of their facilities.

"Communities come together at recreational facilities and having this support available will certainly make a difference," said Marlene Amell, executive director of the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres.  "We are pleased to see the Manitoba government taking the initiative to ensure community centre sports programs are supported."

The First Sports Program will help volunteers and staff continue to provide opportunities for families across the province to play and grow, the premier noted.

Applications for First Sports are available today at community centre offices across the province and online at www.gov.mb.ca/housing/cpp/index.html.

BREAKING NEWS, SWIM CLUBS UNITE!!!!

Good Afternoon;

Club Presidents – Please forward this email to your members and post on your web site. This information and associated action campaign is important if your club is to have a chance to reduce the projected 12.5%increase to rental rates in ALL city swimming pools.

I met with city officials over the last few days including a presentation to Standing Policy Committee for Protection & Community Services this morning.

The councillor I met on Wednesday, who is not a supporter of the budget, suggested an email campaign addressed to the Mayor copied to your local councillor. An email address link is embedded at the end of this email.

· Our presentation to the SPC P&CS this morning centered around 3 main points:

1. As a swimming community, we cannot handle 21.7% worth of increases between September 2009 and April 2011. (19 months)

2. The fact that we are pricing Winnipeg out of the market for national and international competition – which means our swimmers will have to travel even more

3. Both large club and small club impact statements – including inner city programming.

What we asked for...

· Eliminate the proposed pool rental increase planned for April 1, 2011

Swim Manitoba is strongly encouraging each club in Winnipeg to email Mayor Katz and copy there councillor with an individual impact statement accompanied by one or more of the Swim Manitoba key messages in the attached document. Using the SNM key messages is IMPORTANT in delivering a message consistent with our presentation given this morning.

· You may attach the SNM name to your email as long as at least one of the key message phases attached here is included in your email correspondance. Copy and paste the SNM message directly into your email please.

City Council email addresses can be found at the following web site link

Hi all -

The ManSask 2010 Short Course Provincial Championships will be hosted by Swim Manitoba March 18 to 21 at the Pan Am Pool.  To ensure this meet is as successful as it can be, we need the combined efforts of all Manitoba clubs Dwayne Armstrong, meet officials chair, has contacted many of you already.  This message is meant to provide a little more information and support Dwayne's request for officials and volunteers.

As you are all aware, Manitoba has the special privilege of hosting Canadian Age Group Championships and will be home to more than 1,200 swimmers from across Canada for six days in July.  To help prepare for this project, this ManSask meet will be used as a 'dress rehearsal'.  Both the main tank and training tank will be used during preliminaries with only the main tank used during finals to mimic the format of CAGCs and provide ample opportunities to train officials.  National protocols will be used during sessions to offer experience  to all officials

As per national protocol, the following positions will be filled by senior officials assigned by the MSOA representative, Jim Fleury, for ManSask:  Starter, Referee, Chief Inspector of Turns (CIT), Chief Timer (CT), Chief Finish Judge (CFJ).

The following remaining positions will be filled by our meet officials chair, Dwayne Armstrong in the noted numbers per session

      Turn Inspector-Finish - 8

      Turn Inspector-Turn - 4

      Stroke Judge - 2

      Timer - 8

      Clerk of Course - 2

      Safety Marshall - 2

      Deck Operations - 2

Total Officials per session - 28

There will be a total of 11 sessions (counting two preliminary sessions each Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and one final session each Friday, Saturday and Sunday).  Estimated times for each as follows:

Thursday: warm up at 4:30, start at 5:30, end at 8:30

Prelims (Friday, Saturday, Sunday): warm up at 8:00, start at 9:00, end 12:00

Finals (Friday, Saturday, Sunday): warm up at 4:00, start at 5:00, end 8:00

To help ensure representation from all Manitoba swim clubs, I have calculated the expected number of volunteers needed from each club based on the number of swimmers entered in past ManSask meets.  Officials per session are as follows:

Team    # officials
Manta   8
Marlins 7
Wave    1
SJS     3
U of M  2
Brandon 1
