2009 – 2010 Swim Season

Hi all -

The ManSask 2010 Short Course Provincial Championships will be hosted by Swim Manitoba March 18 to 21 at the Pan Am Pool.  To ensure this meet is as successful as it can be, we need the combined efforts of all Manitoba clubs Dwayne Armstrong, meet officials chair, has contacted many of you already.  This message is meant to provide a little more information and support Dwayne's request for officials and volunteers.

As you are all aware, Manitoba has the special privilege of hosting Canadian Age Group Championships and will be home to more than 1,200 swimmers from across Canada for six days in July.  To help prepare for this project, this ManSask meet will be used as a 'dress rehearsal'.  Both the main tank and training tank will be used during preliminaries with only the main tank used during finals to mimic the format of CAGCs and provide ample opportunities to train officials.  National protocols will be used during sessions to offer experience  to all officials

As per national protocol, the following positions will be filled by senior officials assigned by the MSOA representative, Jim Fleury, for ManSask:  Starter, Referee, Chief Inspector of Turns (CIT), Chief Timer (CT), Chief Finish Judge (CFJ).

The following remaining positions will be filled by our meet officials chair, Dwayne Armstrong in the noted numbers per session

      Turn Inspector-Finish - 8

      Turn Inspector-Turn - 4

      Stroke Judge - 2

      Timer - 8

      Clerk of Course - 2

      Safety Marshall - 2

      Deck Operations - 2

Total Officials per session - 28

There will be a total of 11 sessions (counting two preliminary sessions each Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and one final session each Friday, Saturday and Sunday).  Estimated times for each as follows:

Thursday: warm up at 4:30, start at 5:30, end at 8:30

Prelims (Friday, Saturday, Sunday): warm up at 8:00, start at 9:00, end 12:00

Finals (Friday, Saturday, Sunday): warm up at 4:00, start at 5:00, end 8:00

To help ensure representation from all Manitoba swim clubs, I have calculated the expected number of volunteers needed from each club based on the number of swimmers entered in past ManSask meets.  Officials per session are as follows:

Team    # officials
Manta   8
Marlins 7
Wave    1
SJS     3
U of M  2
Brandon 1
Selkirk Dolphins        1
Parkland Gators 1
Prairie Storm   1
Steinbach Skimmers      1
The Pas Roadrunners     1
Sherbrook Sharks        1
MCPSA   0
Flin Flon Aqua Jets     0

I do realize numbers may not work out exactly like this at each and every session but I do encourage you to use these numbers as a guideline to nudge your parents into volunteering.  I apologize if your swim club is missing from my list as it was generated directly from ManSask entries from 2009.  Please feel free to volunteer!  Please contact Dwayne Armstrong directly at pdarm@mts.net to schedule your volunteer shifts.

Thank you in advance for all your help making this a great swim meet for all our swimmers!

Swim Manitoba has proposed changes to it's current By-Laws.  Please review the two PDF Documents below and  share your thoughts or concerns with them and us by emailing your comments to the following: swimmb.bylaws@gmail.com & bllambert@shaw.ca

Proposed New By-Laws 2010 Summary.pdf

Dear Swim Manitoba Members;

Like all activities in our society, sport has changed dramatically in the 21st century and organizations such as Swim/Natation Manitoba must adapt to meet those changes.

In order to adapt, it is vital that we update our bylaws and policies to ensure we can serve our athletes and coaches better. SNM has formed a sub-committee to review all of our governance documents to determine how we can govern our sport more effectively. We are working hard to ensure improved documents are in place by the start of the 2010-2011 season... (Please read more in the PDF attachment)

H1N1 Facts

What is it:  A respiratory illness that affects the nose, throat and lungs.  Also known as human swine influenza

Symptoms
Almost Always:
Cough & High Fever
Common: Fatigue, Muscle aches, Soar throat, Headache, Decreased appetite, Runny nose
Sometimes:  Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea
Contagiousness:  It is believed that this period is for one day before the onset of symptoms & continues for approximately seven days after symptoms have started.  Symptoms begin to appear 2-7 days after the onset.
How is it Spread:  It is spread the same way as regular seasonal influenza.  This happens when an infected person coughs or sneezes and their germs enter the nose, eyes or throat of another person.  The germs can also rest on hard surfaces like counter, doorknobs, keyboards or desks.
How long can influenza remain viable on objects or hard surfaces:  About 2 to 8 hours.

In order to help stop the spread of influenza within the club, we are asking parents to assist with the following:

1. If your child is showing any symptoms do not send them to practice and keep them home till they are better. Please email or call your coach to let them know.
2. All athletes should have their own water bottle. We will really be enforcing this rule over the next few weeks.
3. Encourage your child to wash his or her hands often, especially before eating, or after coughing or sneezing into their hands.
4. If a swimmer tells a coach they are sick while at practice we will be sending the swimmer home. We will call the parent to come pick up that swimmer from the pool and will keep them supervised until you arrive.
5. Please be extra vigilante if your child is in the Junior group. H1N1 according to
MB Health can be hardest on pregnant women so we need to help our Junior Coach in this matter by keeping kids home if they are sick.
