ST JAMES SEALS SWIMMERS ON THE NATIONAL SCENE

WINNIPEG – The St James Seals Swim Club announced today that they will be sending two swimmers to the Canadian Age Group Nationals taking place July 22nd to 25th at the Pan Am Pool in Winnipeg.

A pair of 13-year-olds, Michael Solomon and Cameron Russell, will be representing the Seals at the national competition. Solomon, who has swam for the Seals since 2008, qualified in the 200 meter backstroke. He was a 2010 Man/Sask Provincial Champion and is currently ranked in the top five in Canada in the 50 fly.  Russell has been with the Seals for the past five years and qualified in the 200 meter breastroke.  He was a multiple medalist at the 2010 Man/Sask provincial championships and is ranked in the top 25 in Canada.  Both swimmers have also been selected to Team Manitoba.

This is the first time the Seals have sent competitors to the Canadian Age Group Nationals since Ian Grunewald was named as the head coach in 2008.  Grunewald, a two-time Manitoba Grassroots Coach of the Year, is excited about the prospects of his two swimmers.

“Michael is an extremely talented athlete that really stepped up this season in the backstroke to become ranked in the top ten in his age group in Canada,” said Grunewald.  “And Cam is consistently getting faster and faster and is on a steady pace to be at the top of the Canadian rankings.”

Both Solomon and Russell will be representing the Seals in five events at July’s Age Group Nationals which is the largest competition held annually in Canada with an estimated attendance of 1,200 swimmers.

The St James Seals is one of the longest running swim clubs in Canada and has been part of the St James community for over 40 years.  The club is committed to guiding and directing young athletes to achieve his or her maximum potential and currently has 90 competitive and non-competitive swimmers ranging in age from 5 to 18.  Visit www.saintjamesseals.com for more information.
